After some weeks off, we’re back with a brand new mix with some mostly brand new music from Southern folks holding on to the last bits of summer and fighting hurricane-shaped dragons. We’ve got indie folk, indie rock, some damn bounce music, and much more. As always, this playlist is my tribute to the many, many folks from or in the South making great music. Stay safe, my dears! These storms are no joke.
Texas: Lizzo, “Water Me”
If you don’t have an altar in your home where you worship Lizzo, I trust you’re simply waiting for a full moon or something to get on that? Anyway, this is her latest. Behold.
Florida: Kilo Tango, “Daisy”
Florida-native, LA-based Katie Mitchell’s Kilo Tango is pure and magical garage pop. This is from her latest EP.
Kentucky: GRLwood, “Enemy”
Angry, screamy experimental dream pop out of Louisville, and in their own words: “one FagBabe, one guitar, one suitcase drum. Screaming and hollering into reverb oceans.Nobody dances or moves, they usually stand there wide-eyed, and stiff, but thats a good prey-response, in my opinion.cus i’m gonna eat you.” You’ll find live footage from July below.
Tennessee: Kesha, “Praying”
I’m going to take a hard turn here and add something new-ish from Kesha, who, of course, spent her formative years in Nashville. She spent the last few years, however, in a career-stalling, mind-fucking purgatory created and maintained by a terrible predator, and I’m so happy to hear from her again.
Florida: Sh-Booms, “Usage Fee”
Orlando-based soul band, the Sh-Booms, are certain to be one of those groups that blow your mind completely when you see them live (sadly, I have not), but you’re not missing much just listening to their debut album. LISTEN. The Supreme Queen Mizz Bren will give you chills.
Virginia: Aimee Mann, “Goose Snow Cone”
Can’t argue with Aimee Mann. Ever. Also, this song was inspired by an Instagram photo of a cat. Y’all.
Georgia: Lunar Vacation, “Anna”
There are so many wonderful musical things happening in Atlanta right now, and Lunar Vacation is definitely among them. They have an easy indie surf rock vibe led by the voice of an ANGEL.
Louisiana: Rareluth, “Without You I Am Nothing”
A vibrant, sexy new dance single from Lafayette-native Christine Peirce and company. I always feel sun-kissed after listening to Rareluth. Just saying, it’s nice.
Louisiana: Big Freedia, “Dive”
Did someone say SEXY and LOUISIANA?
Florida: Camila Cabello, “Crying in the Club”
I imagine this song to be Miami-based Cabello’s response to a former friend begging her forgiveness (at the club) for voting for our current president, but they don’t have an identity outside of this terrible political decision they’ve made. What will they do? And, she’s all: “You think, that you’ll die without him.” But, “It ain’t true, ain’t true, ain’t true, no.” And, “Ain’t no crying in the club.” Anyway, this is a pop song about Cabello’s nerves recording her debut album.
